    Maeklong Railway Market

The Wongwian Yai–Maha Chai line is planned to be rebuilt as the elevated Dark Red Line, with works planned for 2031–2034 (Daily News); today’s trains are not affected.

Holidays, alcohol ban days and stoppages

The trains keep the same times at weekends and on public holidays. Alcohol ban days change nothing: this is a food and fresh market, not a bar.

The trains stop only when the railway announces it: track work stopped them in 2016 (Khaosod) and Covid cut services in 2020–2021 (Thai PBS). The State Railway’s call centre is 1690, 24 hours.

    Entry, paying and safety

    Entry
Free; it is a public market on the track.
    Paying
Cash in small notes. Thai QR needs a Thai bank app.
    Safety
When the horn sounds and the awnings come down, step off the rails and stand behind the stall line until the train has passed. The railway tidied up the market from November 2023 (Thai PBS); the detailed rules on where to stand are checking.
    Alcohol ban days
Nothing changes on alcohol ban days: these are food markets, not bars. Alcohol ban days

    Questions

How many times a day does the train pass Maeklong Railway Market?
    Eight: four trains come in (08:30, 11:10, 14:30, 17:40) and four go out (06:20, 09:00, 11:30, 15:30), every day.
Does the train run at weekends and on holidays?
Yes, at the same times. It stops only when the State Railway announces a suspension.
Can I get there from Bangkok by train only?
Yes: Wongwian Yai to Maha Chai, the ferry, then Ban Laem to Mae Klong, about ฿20 one way. To see the 11:10 train, take the 08:35 from Wongwian Yai.
    Which train should I watch?
One coming in and the same set going back out: 08:30 then 09:00, 11:10 then 11:30, or 14:30 then 15:30. Most tours come for 11:10 and 11:30, so that pair is the most crowded (review-based).

    BEFORE YOU GO

    1. Bring cash

Small notes for food, boats and fares. Thai QR payments need a Thai bank app.

    2. Start early

Damnoen Saduak is best before 08:00, and the train-only route to Maeklong starts at Wongwian Yai before 09:00 for the 11:10 train.

    3. Plan the way back

The last train back from Maeklong leaves at 15:30. After that, or from Amphawa at night, you return by minivan, car or tour.
