Short answer

Three ways: an operator’s eSIM bought online before you fly (AIS and True sell them), a SIM or eSIM at an operator counter in the arrival hall, or an eSIM from an international seller. Prices below are the operators’ own.
Whichever you pick, the number is registered to your passport (operator terms, under NBTC rules; AIS and True agree): at most 3 per person per brand, and a tourist SIM is valid 60 days at most.

International eSIM sellers
Sellers abroad resell data on a Thai network, often with a choice of data amounts. Prices are on the seller’s page, usually in US dollars; compare with the same number of days in the operator table above. Some have data only, without a Thai phone number for SMS codes.

Check your phone first
- eSIM: dial *#06#; if an EID number appears, the phone supports eSIM (AIS). It must not be locked to one carrier.
- Keep your home SIM in the phone for bank codes if you have dual SIM; turn off roaming on it to avoid charges.
- An operator eSIM bought online: AIS asks you to register it no more than 7 days before departure.

Getting connected
Choose before you land
Operator eSIM online, a counter in the arrival hall, or an international eSIM seller.
Have your passport ready
Registration needs it, at the counter or in the operator’s online check.
Keep the package details
Validity counts from activation; the package ends on its last day and cannot be topped up past 60 days.
Staying longer?
To keep a tourist number beyond 60 days, AIS asks you to re-confirm your identity (SMS to 4444161 or an AIS Shop); True and dtac ask for a passport check at a shop.

Questions
- Which is cheapest?
- For the same days the three operators list the same prices for 8, 15 and 30 days (499, 699 and 1,199 baht); AIS also has 5 days for 399 baht, True a 10-day data-only SIM for 349 baht. AIS adds 7% VAT.
- Do I need to register a tourist SIM?
- Yes. Every SIM and eSIM is registered with a passport (operator terms, under NBTC rules).
- Why do I need a Thai number?
- Grab, delivery apps and Thai banks send one-time codes by SMS to a Thai number.
- I am staying longer than 60 days.
- A tourist SIM lasts 60 days at most. To keep the number, re-confirm your identity with the operator; for a long stay, many switch to a regular prepaid or postpaid number.
- I live in Thailand on a DTV.
- A regular number in your name suits a long stay better than a tourist SIM: bank and app sign-ups stay on one number.
