Why night rides took off

What the press and riders say, with the source of each point.

  1. It is cheap. The press says ฿10 for 30 minutes is enough for a ride around the old town. Sources: Planning research summary (THE STANDARD), 31 October 2026 · Planning research summary (Spacebar), 2 November 2026

  2. The roads empty after midnight. Fewer cars at night: on the night of 28 October Rattanakosin was crowded with riders from 00:00 to 03:00. Sources: Planning research summary (The Momentum), 28 October 2026 · Planning research summary (THE STANDARD), 31 October 2026 · Planning research summary (THE STANDARD Life), 31 October 2026

  3. It photographs well. Lit palace walls, Wat Arun across the river at night and the lights of old buildings are what the posts show. Sources: Planning research summary (THE STANDARD Life), 31 October 2026 · Planning research summary (Spacebar), 2 November 2026

The three routes compared

Route lengths are measured on a bicycle router (OpenStreetMap data): the shortest bike route between the stops, without photo stops. Posts quote 7–7.8 km for the popular loop; the router follows one-way streets and gives 8.5 km.

There is no official list of points. Reviews place Anywheel points at MRT Wat Mangkon (a daytime old-town route, 2024) and at MBK and Samyan Mitrtown (a night route towards Siam, 2024). Points near the Grand Palace and Tha Tien: look in the app (checking). One report says some points have almost no bikes in the evening (Urban Creature, 29 October).

Food on the route

The night-ride posts rarely name the shops people stopped at, so this is a short list of places on the route: those open after midnight, places that are open all night, and three Michelin-listed shops, some of which close in the evening (hours: Google Maps and Ryoii, read 3 November 2026; Michelin guide data; the flower market from an Instagram observation).

Most famous shops close by midnight. Eat before you ride, or head to Maha Chai Road for noodles until 2am.

Riding at night

  • Check the front and rear lights and the brakes before you unlock. Wear something light and bring water.
  • Avoid very dark or empty streets and ride with others. Some stretches are remote, and riders advise against going alone. The streets by the palace have police and army posts, which some riders find reassuring.
  • Get off and walk across busy crossings; some road surfaces are uneven. Keep earphones low or leave them out.
  • Do not ring the bell on residential streets at night. Do not ride against traffic, on pavements, or with two on one bike: residents have complained, and a campaign asks for quiet riding. From riders’ reports: Owner’s own reading
  • Be quiet in front of the palace and the temples, and follow police directions during events.

Getting home

The MRT stops around midnight; a ride that starts after 23:30 may end after the last trains. Last trains at the three stations used here (BEM, read for the temple pages):

Questions

Can tourists use bike sharing in Bangkok?
Yes. Anywheel accepts a SIM from any country, from age 16, with no ID requirement listed in its FAQ (the terms say it may ask for ID in some cases). Whether HelloRide takes a foreign phone number is still being checked; its help center tells visitors to use a card that works abroad.
How much does Anywheel cost?
฿10 for 30 minutes (31–60 minutes ฿20). Passes: 1 day ฿50, 7 days ฿100, 30 days ฿200, 150 days ฿750. There is no deposit; the first top-up is at least ฿100, or buy a pass. Riders say a night costs ฿20–30.
Where do I return the bike?
At a P point in the app. Left outside one, Anywheel adds ฿50; HelloRide charges a relocation fee of US$20 (about ฿700).
Is it safe to cycle in Bangkok at night?
It depends on where. Riders advise against going alone on remote stretches and avoiding very dark streets; the streets by the palace have police and army posts. Cars still come on the way to Memorial Bridge and at the flower market. Check lights and brakes first. This is not a safety guarantee.
Can I cycle around the Grand Palace at night?
Yes, from outside: you can ride along the lit wall. The palace and the temples are closed at night. From 15 December 2026 to 19 December 2026 roads around the palace and Sanam Luang are expected to close for the royal cremation.
What time should I start?
After 23:30, according to riders’ reports: earlier, cars are still on the roads. On weekend nights bikes can run short, so rent early or ride on a weekday.
