Erawan Shrine

WATPATHUM WAN

The Erawan Shrine is a Hindu shrine, not a Buddhist temple: it houses Phra Phrom, the Thai form of Brahma. It stands on the Ratchaprasong corner among the shopping malls, free and busy all day.

What to see at the Erawan Shrine

    1. Phra Phrom, the four-faced Brahma

Worshippers go round all four sides with garlands. The present statue was put in place on 21 May 2006, with pieces of the original in it.

    2. Thai dancers giving thanks

When a wish comes true, people hire the dance troupe at the shrine to perform as thanks. Prices: checking.

    3. Five more Hindu shrines nearby

Lakshmi, Trimurti, Ganesha, Indra and Narayana on Garuda, all around the Ratchaprasong intersection.

    4. The view from the BTS walkway

The Chit Lom walkway looks down on the shrine: the best place to see the whole scene without the crowd.

    The story

The Erawan Hotel’s foundation was believed to have been laid on the wrong date, and an astrologer advised a shrine to counter the bad luck. The Fine Arts Department made the statue, and it was enshrined in November 1956.

In March 2006 a man destroyed the original statue with a hammer. An identical one, with fragments of the old, was installed two months later.

    Don’t

    • Incense and candles are no longer lit here: leave them unlit where offerings are placed (news, August 2026).
    • Do not climb on the shrine’s railings for photos.

    BEFORE YOU GO

    Before you go

    1. Cover shoulders and knees

Pack a light long-sleeved top or scarf and long trousers or a long skirt; it is hot, so loose cotton works best.

    2. Shoes you can slip off

You take them off at every hall door.

    3. Cash in small notes

Ticket offices may take cards, but ferries, drinks and donation boxes are cash.
